One hundred and eleven million people tuned in to watch the latest Super Bowl in February. Every weekend of the regular season roughly one million Americans crammed into stadia around the country to watch their teams play. The average stadium attendance in the NFL is roughly 65,000. The average NFL stadium was in the area of 95% full last season. The total revenue accrued by the National Football League over the 2010 season was about 9.3 billion dollars.

These are absolutely astounding figures for a European sports fan to digest. But in this writer’s opinion, this same sheer overwhelming success lies at the root of the NFL’s current problems.
