Reflecting on a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United back in September, Bolton defender Zat Knight said post match that “It’s very disappointing when you twice go up at home [and don’t win], I think we deserved to win the game.”

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Spurs in December, in which Didier Drogba saw his injury-time penalty saved by Heurelho Gomes. Chelsea captain John Terry remarked post-match that “I thought we deserved to win the game, especially in the second half when we dominated”.

Just like blaming the referee, commenting that your team ‘deserved to win’ a game which in fact you did not win, is commonplace and performs a useful function. It gives a positive impression about how your side performed, and implies that some outside influence unfairly robbed you of your rightful three points.
