A new series begins, where writers describe a recent match they played in. If you played in an interesting match and would like to write one for us, contact us via electronic mail/twitter. First up is Tom Goulding, with the story of last Saturday’s trip to North London.


Queues at Holborn, crowds at Stratford, a slow rail replacement bus service to Leytonstone – there’s not much point in dwelling on the boring part of the story. However, the effect of this literal nightmare (I’ve had the ‘being late for a football game’ one so often recently I can’t tell between the real and the dream world) was that when I finally arrived in Chigwell, only a run through suburbia to the pitches allowed me to arrive on time for this one.

A late Friday night pull-out meant that we only had ten players for the game, and the only player on our team younger than me, Gus, hadn’t arrived by the time for kick-off. We had nine men versus them, with the more traditional eleven. ‘Them’ was Old Chigwellians, a mid-table team looking to stifle our (Old Wykehamists’s) promotion ambitions in our very white, very middle class Old Boys league. We lined up 4-3-1, with myself on the left of the 3 and the ref blew for kick-off.
