Diving’s ruining the game. It’s cheating. It’s the lowest form of human behaviour on a football pitch. It’s what those nasty foreigners do to make referees believe our brave English defenders fouled them. And it’s disgusting.


At least, partly wrong. I want to make the distinction between the two types of diving. There’s deceitful diving, and there’s revealing diving. Deceitful diving is when you move your body down to the ground, completely of your own accord, without any external influence. It deceives the referee that a foul occurred when it didn’t, and it should not be encouraged. It is close to deserving the description in the first paragraph above (except without the ‘foreigners’ bit – Ashley Young, in addition to many other British players, is a regular deceitful diver, for example).
