University student Joel Sked reveals a fallacy in the conventional wisdom.


It is the weekend and you have just picked up the coupon from the bookies or logged on to your favourite online account. You are scrolling down the fixtures ticking off games in your mind as you go, “I fancy that”, “possibly”, “not touching them”, “nap”, “if only they were closer to evens”.

You have went from the English Premier League down to the Scottish 3rd division and maybe across to Europe. You have studied and analysed the form tables, made note of the injury list, but you are still struggling to pick that accumulator. The accumulator that will have you glued to Gillette Soccer Saturday at 4.50pm, before culminating in one of two reactions; jumping around in euphoria telling everyone who will listen that you are a gambling genius or ripping up your coupon in disgust and swearing never to bet again – whether it is a £20 treble or £2 on a ridiculous ten teams that will net you over a thousand pound.
